Lap dancing no worse than coffee
Tougher lap dance licensing urged
As they are the same licensing category as pubs or cafes residents have less scope to oppose them as sex shops.
So, currently lap dance clubs are no worse than a pub or a cafe coming under the same lack of scrutiny if a license is applied for. Kate Banyard of the Fawcett Society says:
"Lap dance clubs fuel a sexist culture of treating women as sex objects. Areas surrounding lap dance clubs can become ‘no-go’ areas for women.
The only viable solution is to license lap dancing clubs as sex encounter establishments."
Really? No shit. So, we as a society treat women on the same basis as a cup of coffee - something to be purchased whenever we feel the need. Well, I knew that, this is just another example of it and just adds to the feeling of sharks in the water - and they’ve not been fed recently……
So here we are again, putting up the No Swimming signs and no-one is reading them, no-one is listening and they’re all just piling into the water to swim and they have no real idea why we’re shouting, no real idea why this is so wrong.
Kate, I’m sorry but I disagree - perhaps the only solution IS to license lap clubs as sex encounter establishments, but only because they won’t take the steps that are really needed to dismantle the sex trade completely. The harm that is done, promoted and perpetuated in those places is obscene.

I hear coffee’s pretty dangerous though… Actually I think the idea behind the Fawcett society campaign is to make it easier for councils to stop lap dancing clubs opening. Which they usually can if they get enough objections locally. But yeah just get rid of them……..

Hi Polly,
You could be right. Perhaps in the current situation the “only viable solution” is to license them as a sex encounter establishments. (bold is my emphasis) It’s not ideal but it’s viable, it’s a start and it’s workable.
I don’t drink coffee any more, it makes my heart race. So, yeah, coffee can be dangerous too.

Hi Shrug,
Thanks for your opinion. Actually, no, I’d rather the women employed in the clubs didn’t have to do that job in the first place.
