Now, please take a moment to consider all the women who have been, will be and are being, persecuted as Witches around the world.

  1. Thank you so much for that, Sharkbait. :)

It is Witches’ Eve tonight. And misogyny continues: http://maggiehaysagainstporn.blogspot.com/2008/09/culture-of-patriarchists-hates-women.html

Tonight is the night of mourning the (nearly) 9 million women who were killed as witches in medieval Europe.. The witches were women-healers, pagans, midwives and they were a very women-centered culture. The Church despised them, just like historical & contemporary patriarchy hates all women.

Tonight, I believe everybody should at least take a li’l minute to think about all the women who have been and are raped, tortured or killed by men in a patriarchy (if most people cannot think about it the rest of the year- like I do). I think about all those sufferings everyday and it hurts. It hurts so much living in a rape/pornified culture, in such an oppressive society. :(

Thanks a loooot for this post, Sharkbait. I am so glad to notice that there is someone somewhere who cares about Witches’ Eve. *Hugs*

    In Sisterhood and Solidarity,

    Maggie.

  2. What I find worse is that it isn’t just Medieval times, it’s STILL happening. It’s not on the same scale for sure, and I don’t think there are any actual burnings going on, but Women who heal, who follow Paganism, are still being victimised.

Exactly! Many women are still being raped, tortured and (sometimes) killed all around the world in contemporary patriarchy. :(

    Yep, that also.

  4. I celebrate Samhain with a private ritual. Honoring my ancestors and all women condemned as witches from the European Burning Times to the present day. And not forgetting an ancestor of mine who was tried as a witch in Paisley, Scotland…for ‘bewitchment’ of course.

    Merry Samhain.

    Yep, that also.

  6. There are still parts of the world where women are condemned as ‘witches’ as a common occurrence. Some of them are just children.

  7. Sorry for the serial posting, but it wasn’t even The Medieval Times it was Early Modern. Closer than we think.

I checked. It was from the 15th to the 18th century (during 300 years).

    Thanks for the info, Sparkle.
